Syllabus for Drawing and Painting A

 

Week 1

*Syllabus and survey of class assignments

*Rules and Procedures

*Return Parent Acknowledgement

*Portfolio preparation

*Create an Abstract Design for your portfolio

Medium: colored pencils

Homework: Use four geometric shapes (circles, triangles, squares, etc.)  to create an Abstract Design.

Standard 2.2 Prepare a portfolio of original two-and-three dimensional works of art that reflects refined craftsmanship and technical skills.

 

Week 2

*Review of the Elements of Art

*Review of the Principles of Design

*Line exercise (diagonal lines, vertical lines, circular lines, curvy lines, cross-hatching, pointillism, stippling, etc.)

Continue working on your portfolio

*Assignment “Dream city”. Use curved and distorted lines.

Medium: graphite pencil/markers, ballpoint pen

Homework: Draw an outline of your shoes three times from the different angles.

 

Week 3

* Assignment “Dream city”. Element of Art-line

*Principle of Design-pattern

*Create a multi-media composition

*Use curved and distorted lines.

Medium: pencil, ink

Homework: Draw your name three times by using different patterns.

Standard: 2.1. Create original works of art of increasing complexity and skill in a variety of media that reflect their feelings and points of view.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Week 4

*Illuminated letters - lecture and presentation

* Letter stencils/fonts

* Create a letter initial in Medieval Style  

Medium: watercolor/acrylic, paper

Homework: Draw your name by using geometric or organic shapes.

Standard: 2.4 Demonstrate in their own works of art a personal style and advanced proficiency in communicating an idea, theme, or emotion.

 

Week 5  

*Review of a three- dimensional form with the use of a cast shadow

* Sphere drawing with the Six Categories of Light (value chart)

* Value exercises - build up value gradually

*Draw a Still Life in contour line (composition)

Medium: graphite pencil/charcoal

Homework: Draw a bottle five times.

 

Week 6

*Still Life Drawing with Chiaroscuro

*3-D form

*Whimsical Still Life drawing with texture and values

Homework: Drawing of three angular forms with chiaroscuro

Standard: 2.1. Create original works of art of increasing complexity and skill in a variety of media that reflect their feelings and points of view.

 

Week 7

*Portrait (Review portraits from Renaissance, Impressionism and Cubism ).A. Durer, Michelangelo, P. Picasso, V. Van Gogh.

* Facial Features: nose, mouth, eyes and ears.

* Create a face by using a grid

* Proportions

* Facial Expressions

* Draw a self-portrait

Medium: pencil

Homework: Draw a portrait of your friend/relative with three facial expressions: angry, happy, tired.

 

 

Week 8

*Composite shape problem in Cubism Art Style (lecture about  P. Picasso)

* Interchangeable Positive and Negative Space (lecture about H. Matisse)

*Create a drawing in Cubism Style (portraits or self-portraits)

Medium: oil pastel/color pencils

Homework: Create a story collage with two positive/two negative spaces.

 

 

 

 

 

Week 9

*Explore the history and evolution of Japanese woodblock prints.

*Printmaking by using carving tools, linoleum blocks and water-soluble ink

Homework: Draw your favorite Halloween character

Standard: 5.3 Prepare portfolios of their original works of art for a variety of purposes.

 

Week 10

*Chinese painting - landscape

*Spatial perspective

Medium: ink, nib pen

Homework: research Chinese horoscope and draw your horoscope sign in ballpoint pen or marker.

 

Week 11

*Review Perspective

* One Point Perspective

* Two Point Perspective

*Three Point perspective

*Draw an Urban Landscape

Medium: pencil

Homework: Draw an Interior of your room

Standard 2.1 Create original work of art of increasing complexity and skill in a variety of media that reflect their feelings and points of view.

 

Week 12

*Continue working on an Urban Landscape

*Add details, such as windows, doors

*Use value

Homework: Make three sketches of your room ( in and out)

 

Week 13

*Create a Music Poster with the name of your favorite Music Group/Singer

* Review Color Wheel( tints, shades, hue, saturation, primary colors, secondary colors, tertiary colors, warm colors, cool colors).

*Include Elements of Art: Shape, Form, Space, Texture, Color, Line, Value

For this drawing you are to make a Poster and use a pencil and colored pencils. The images should be based on your own creativity and not a copy of something. The subject may be taken from your memory of a real object or an event but it should be something you mentally construct. Then draw it by using enclosed shapes in both positive and negative spaces. Define the shapes with outlines, with texture and with values. Fill the entire page. There should be no left over space.

Homework: Drawing of a school event by implying the mood.

Standard 2.2 Plan and create works of art that reflect complex ideas, such as distortion, color theory, arbitrary color, scale, expressive content, and real versus virtual.

 

Week 14

Georgia O’Keefe - video about her paintings (Working with Abstraction).

*Draw an impressive flower in G. O’Keeffe-inspired art style with an emphasis on the theme of power and delicacy.

Medium: pencil, acrylic, canvas

Homework: Choose your favorite flowers and draw three sketches of them by adding values.

Standard 2.2 Plan and create works of art that reflect complex ideas, such as distortion, color theory, arbitrary color, scale, expressive content, and real versus virtual.

 

 

 

Week 15

*Continue working on your project

*Finalize details and background

Homework: Draw a portrait of your friend/relative with three facial expressions: angry, happy, tired.

 

Week 16

*Introduction to Figure Drawing

*Proportions

*Figures in motion

* Fantasy Clip Art

* Create an imaginative character

Medium: pencil, watercolor, ink, gel pen

Homework: Draw three gestures of a figure in action.

 

Week 17

*Printmaking

*A. Warhol – slide show

* Make your printed poster

*Single color print, tissue print, tissue dye print, scribble marker print

Medium; plate, ink

Homework: Research paper about A. Warhol and his artworks.

Standard 2.1 Create original works of art of increasing complexity and skill in a variety of media that reflect their feelings and points of view.

 

Week 18

Final Exam will include a spontaneous drawing and a criticism in writing of a work of art.
