Required Materials (daily): pens, pencils, 1 spiral notebook, and 1three ring binder with loose leaf paper.
Required Daily Materials (unless otherwise specified): Notebook, writing instruments (pen & pencil), textbook, and open minds.
Course Description: Modern World History is a course that fulfills the state and school district requirements for a sophomore year world history course. This course will examine themes and topics in world history beginning with the origins of western political thought, up until the major events of our current decade. The class will examine topics and themes including, but not limited to, the Industrial Revolution, the Age of Nationalism, global imperialism, World Wars One and Two, the Rise of Communism, the Cold War era, the post-Cold War era, as well as nation building efforts of this century. In addition, we will pay particular attention to the ways in which these global changes have impacted the world around us.
Work Requirements: This class will fulfill the A-G state requirements for 10th grade World History and will be treated as such. Students can expect weekly homework assignments, notebook checks as well as multiple quizzes and unit exams throughout the course of the year. In addition, there will also be several writing assignments and projects that students must complete in order receive a passing grade in this course.
Note: The following policies for grading, late work, absent work, etc. have been established by the Social Science Department and are consistent amongst all Social Science teachers.
Students’ grades will be evaluated based on the following:
Class Work//Participation: 25%
Homework: 10%
Quizzes: 15%
Exams/Paper/Projects: 40%
Final: 10%
Grading Scale:
89.5% - 100% = A
79.5% - 89.4% = B
69.5% - 79.4% = C
59.5% - 69.4% = D
0% - 59.4% = F
No Name Policy:
Work turned in without proper heading (Name, date, period) will be posted on a designated “No-Name” classroom wall. Any work claimed will recieve 50% credit.
Late Work Policy:
All assignments are due at the beginning of class. No late work is accepted. Students who have extracurricular, family, or other obligations are encouraged to speak to your teacher and ask for upcoming assignments and complete assignments ahead of time.
Absent Work:
After an excused absence, it is the student’s responsibility to:
Visit the class website or ask a classmate for any assignment information or notes.
Pick up any assignments.
Schedule make-up exams or quizzes.
The due dates for absent work are as follows:
If the assignment was due the day the student was absent, the assignment is due the day a student returns from an excused absence.
A student gets one day per day of excused absence to make up an assignment after returning to class before it is considered late. It is up to the student to monitor this deadline.
No additional time is given to major projects or assignments unless there is an extreme circumstance.
No work is accepted for students with unexcused absences.
Make-Up Exams or Quizzes:
Students with excused absences must schedule their make-up exam or quiz upon returning to class. Make-up exams and quizzes can only be administered before/after school or during lunch (teacher discretion) within one week of returning to class. No make-up exams or quizzes are given to students with unexcused absences.
Classroom Rules and Regulations: The following rules and regulations are intended to keep the classroom a safe and positive learning environment. 1) Students are expected to bring writing materials and textbooks and readings every day unless otherwise notified. Students are expected to be in class every day that school is in session. Failure to come to class prepared may result in grade reduction in student's class participation and attendance grade. 2) Disruptive and discourteous behavior is strictly prohibited. Such behavior will result in dismissal from class as well as a reduction in the students’ class participation and attendance grade.

Propaganda Activity Due 1/29

World War I Propaganda Project
1. Create a World War I themed propaganda poster. You must decorate the poster to be eye catching so that if a person were walking down the street it would get their attention. Create a rough sketch or design to be evaluated prior to your creation, to make sure it is on the right track and appropriate for school. I must approve the sketch before you begin the final version of your piece.
Choose one of the following WWI propaganda poster topics:
⇒ Buying Victory Bonds which encouraged public financial support for the war effort.
⇒ Saving/Conserving Food civilians were encouraged to ration and not waste their food.
⇒ Keeping Your Mouth Shut – civilians were urged not to talk openly about the war effort in case an enemy spy was listening.
⇒ Joining the Army – young men were encouraged to sign-up for the army.
⇒ Demonizing the Enemy (Making the Germans look bad) civilians were shown pictures of Germans as baby killing, crazed maniacs, for example.
⇒ Women and the war effort – women were encouraged to help the war effort by taking on jobs traditionally performed by males, such as working in factories and on farms.
2 On a separate sheet of paper you will create a analysis of your piece. This should include the following information:
• Who or what is your topic about?
• An analysis of your own propaganda poster. You should clearly explain the
significance your slogan as well as why you included all of the images used. This mini report should be between 2 and 3 full, well written paragraphs.
